A Difficult Time

I try to stay focused on whatever projects are at hand, but it's been tough during the past few months because of my mother's cancer.

My mom is a 1951 graduate of Southside High School here in Memphis. She and my father married in 1951 and lived in the small town of Middleton, where my father worked in the banking business. I've always compared Middleton to Mayberry. It was definitely a simple way of life.

Mom was a homemaker, musician, artist, etc. Like most Mom's, she wore many different hats. She was an accomplished pianist and played in church for over 50 years. Once the kids left home, she took up art and actually became very good at it. She was definitely one talented lady.

Her knowledge of the Bible was astounding. she taught several different women's Bible classes through the years. She and my Dad made sure that we were in church every Sunday.

She had surgery last year for cancer and went through follow up radiation. In January of this year, with more symptoms, we found that the cancer had spread and that surgery just wasn't an option. So we've tried to make the most of every day.

The last few weeks have been tough, seeing Mom slip into a bed-ridden state. Along with my Dad, I've tried to be there for her every step of the way. She's near the end of her life and I know that she is in God's hands.

In a visit the other night, she told me that she was "going home". I reminded her that she'll get to see a son (my brother Mike, also a cancer victim), when she gets to Heaven. It's sad to see her suffer, but I know it won't last much longer.

Many of you reading the blog have probably experienced similar events in your lives. You don't want to let go, but God gives us the grace to deal with these difficult circumstances.

If nothing else, this event has made me think about life, the things that are really important, and what I can do to make a difference in the lives of others.
