AFTERMATH
It's quite obvious to anyone observing the devastation in News Orleans--it won't be cleaned up quickly! The damage is simply incomprehensible!
Tornadoes hit quickly and do tremendous damage, but the damage is usually much more compact than that of a hurricane. Don't get me wrong, I'm humbled each time I visit the site of a tornado touchdown, especially when there is loss of life. But no tornado outbreak that I know of equals what has happened in New Orleans and along the Gulf coast.
Those who have fled New Orleans won't be going back in a day or two. They won't be getting a check from the insurance company and rebuilding. For many residents, they've lost it all. Cities like Memphis and Houston will be their new homes.
The Mid South seems to be rising to the occasion. There has been a great outpouring of assistance for these displaced hurricane victims. Government agencies, churches, civic clubs, and just ordinary citizens are doing all they can to help. Money, meals, clothing items, housing--these are just a few of the items being offered to help.
Way to go Mid South!
